Day 17: Wi-fi pirate!

by Don

Classes are going smoothly. Nothing special to report.

When I am at The London School, instead of using their wi-fi, which was weakish on the first floor when we first arrived, I have been using my own wi-fi router from a local ISP. Theoretically I am the only one who knows the password to this router's wi-fi system, so imagine my surprise when I was about to turn it off this afternoon and noticed that two devices were accessing my router. I'm only using my laptop, and I have no other wi-fi devices with me today. Big snicker: one of the local IT boys, most likely, has noticed my wi-fi and started using it whenever the local system has so many users that it slows down. Or perhaps one of the students or staff or locals has done so. In either case I am not sure.

I pull out my router reference manual, which I hadn't bothered to read. Hm. Admin access to the router's functions has a generic password. I access the functions and change the wi-fi password. Then I change my SSID to "Ja_vas_ulovil!", which means "I caught you!" in Russian. Minor snicker. Then I change the admin password.

I suppose there is someone out there who might be upset about the pirating. Not me. I'm amused. Heck, I'd try to do the same thing myself. And yes, I'd write non-malicious computer viruses as well just for fun, although frankly I don't have time for that kind of stuff

Can't wait for the morning. I'll be looking for smirks from the IT guys.

2015-07-15 update. Hmph. Student Lewis had stayed in my apartment for a couple days, and I had given him my password. It was also entered into his smart phone. I had forgotten that. It was his phone that triggered the second-user notification. There was no pirate at all.

Crud. I liked the other story better.
