Preparation for horse-back riding

by Don

Some of our students may have the opportunity for some horse-back riding this weekend. Behold, here's a little video the school made to prepare us for the event.

Yikes! Pulling on the reins to stop a horse is dangerous. If they don’t respond to a few gentle tugs, your best bet is guiding them into an increasingly smaller circling/spiraling pattern. Most of it is good advice, but someone could get hurt trying to stop a horse like that. (Rookies have a tendency to just fall if pulling on the reins doesn’t work. I don’t know why falling seems a better option than hunkering down and hanging on.) I’m also surprised that they didn’t caution against kicking the horse’s flank during mounting, a common mistake for even experienced (if tired/inattentive) horsemen that tends to lead to getting dragged if your horse is feeling flighty or hasn’t been through basic bombproofing. Then again, I’ve seen these things happen and they worry me more than they’d worry Joe Average.
