Day 27: classes, medical stuff

by Don

Classes as usual today.

Last Friday one of our students, Milly, had sudden stabbing pains in her stomach followed by vomiting after eating fried eggs in the canteen. Many other of our students have been eating fried eggs and had no ill effects, but the cook recently changed, so I found myself scratching my head. Then today another student, Renee, had the stabbing pain thing again. Two data points do not make a trend, but I'm going to be keeping my eyes open.

Warning... blunt biological stuff below...

So today I asked my students how they were pooping. They are mostly having watery stools. I haven't had a solid stool in weeks, which for me is not necessarily a bad thing since I have a complicating issue that actually heals up nicely when that is the case. That said, I'm scratching my head. Our embassy folks said that whenever Bishkek's water has been tested, it has come up free of parasites. But the watery stools seem similar to what I have sometimes experienced in Kazan and have assumed is a result of giardiasis. I'm half tempted to buy some metronidazole and dose myself and see if that has an affect. Of course, metronidazole kills many anaerobic bacteria, so if it worked, it would not be anywhere near a demonstration of giardiasis.
