Kyrgyzstan's Ruling Coalition Nominates Sariev As New Prime Minister

by Don

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's ruling three-party coalition has nominated acting Economy Minister Temir Sariev as the Central Asian nation’s new prime minister.

Lawmakers from the Social Democratic, Ata-Meken (Fatherland), and Ar-Namys (Dignity) parties said on April 29 that they agreed Temirov is the best candidate for the post.

Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev resigned last week amid controversy over the operations of Kyrgyzstan's largest gold mine, Kumtor, and is currently serving as acting prime minister.

Sariev's nomination will be debated in parliament in the near future, Ata-Meken lawmaker Tashbolot Baltabaev told RFE/RL.

President Almazbek Atambaev would make the appointment official.

I'm glad for this. It means there will be no overt, public political processes going on in KY while we are there this summer, which promises for a quiet political backdrop. We actually expected a mostly quiet backdrop, but it is nice to see the circumstances being confirmed.
