Wednesday 2010-06-02 schedule - public
Here is what happened today.
0000 - 0230 | Work on pictures, FaceBook uploads. RWotD blogging. |
0230 - 0600 | Sleep |
0600 - 0800 | Morning routine. Call K to confirm ASU effort reporting confusion. Used Skype from Russia to call her mobile phone. Good call quality. Reasonable price. I'm very pleased. |
0800 - 0900 | Head to bank. Get cash. Head to school. Partial cash distribution to students. |
0900 - 1100 | A few encouraging words to the Russian students on handling speech that comes at them faster than machine gun fire. Head to cafe. Work on RWotD blog. |
1100 - 1300 | Chat with students at break. Aygul brought cake for Jim's birthday. Work on RWotD blog. |
1300 - 1400 | Head to university with students. Lunch in cafeteria. The food there is very good and reasonably priced. |
1400 - 1530 | Lecture was planned to be "Old Kazan. Turkic style in architecture." In fact it was more about the formation of the city and a bit of city planning. I learned that old streets often were built perpendicular to the nearest water source, i.e., river bank or bank of lake. Also streets were later built parallel to the sides of mosques. |
1530 - 1730 | Bus tour around Kazan. Entered a working mosque. Before yesterday I had never been in a mosque. now I've been in two in two days. |
1730 - 1830 | Shopping on Bauman. Wow, GUM is no longer the classless place it once was. Expensive stuff. Kind of a standard European mall now. Caught up with some students as well. Bought a bag for my laptop to make me less obtrusive as a foreigner here. Watched some young Russian posers breakdancing on Bauman. Some were astonishing. I'll try to get video soon. Grabbed a bite to eat, this time a треугольник. |
1830 - 1930 | Head home. |
2100 - 2359 | Linked my Bauman photos to personal FaceBook & CLI group. Made a web presentation of my Kazan Kremlin photos. Posted to web, linked to FB & CLI group. Explored account options to understand my cell phone set-up here so I can reimburse my hostess properly. Headed to bank to get next batch of cadet funds. |

You’re not getting enough sleep.
Don responds: Tell me about it. I’m still completely hosed by jetlag.
