There's an anecdote about the way Catherine the Great made peasants to like potatoes. She forbade them to own, grew or eat potato. Intrigued peasants steal those from perfectly unprotected warehouses. And so it begins.
It may be just a joke, though.

While I have never been served a baked potato as a guest in a Russian home, there is a chain of food stands in Moscow called Kroshka Kartoshka which offers baked potatoes with a wide variety of toppings -- they scoop out the potato, mix it with your toppings, and plop it back into the skin. Delicious!!
