My invitation to Russia has arrived
Now I get to go through the process of applying for the visa. The consulate has now outsourced the processing of the visa, so the processing time now has an additional day added. It also has an online component. Guess that's what I'll be doing this evening.

You have to be invited. Or is that just a requirement of the work visa?
Don responds: No matter what kind of visa you get to go to Russia, you have to have an invitation first. What’s annoying is that you cannot apply for the invitation until 45 days till departure date (although that might be just the work visa), and often the invitation can take 30 days to process on the Russian side, which then leaves only two weeks for getting the visa, which generally takes 14 days without expediting fees, which leaves very little room for error.
The whole procedure is pricey. For me it is in the $600 range.
